The care which has to be exercised in preparing pale crepe rubber is very great in comparison with what is demanded by sheet rubber. This class of dye-stuffs, owing to their forming these insoluble colours, gives really fast colours, capable of resisting lengthened exposure to light and air, and resisting washing, acids and alkalies. That these were actually cases of scarlatina was rendered certain by two servants in the family falling ill at the same time with the distemper, who had been exposed to the infection with the young ladies. They do not dye cotton or linen well, some not at all, others are absorbed to a slight extent by the cotton, but only pale tints are produced, while others may be used along with metallic mordants to dye bright but pale and fugitive shades. At this time it is quite difficult to say with certainty whether the original gear set offered a variety of ratios, as was true of slightly later Maudslay lathes, or a fixed ratio.
