Darwin and others, that very extensive regions of the continent of South America have been undergoing slow and gradual upheaval, by which the level plains of Patagonia, covered with recent marine shells, and the Pampas of Buenos Ayres, have been raised above the level of the sea. Before very long, a counter-irritant appeared in the shape of a fellow-traveller, whose luggage consisted of a stick and an old pair of boots. Similar bone-beds occur in the Carboniferous Limestone of Armagh, in Ireland, where they are made up chiefly of the teeth of fishes of the Placoid order, nearly all of them rolled as if drifted from a distance. The recent discovery of Coleoptera in the Carboniferous shows, however, that the preceding limits are not absolute, and will probably soon be overpassed. If the panels are worked separately, it is difficult to get the side lines squarely above each other. The evidence as to the climate of Europe during this epoch is somewhat conflicting. Some of the genera are common to the Tertiary formations, and some are distinct. The first star of telescopic interest that we find in Andromeda is , a double difficult on account of the faintness of the smaller component.
