In the case of yarn-dyed fabrics the dyestuff has penetrated through the yarn, while in the case of piece-dyed fabrics the dyestuff has no chance to penetrate as completely as the yarn-dyed fabric. There was a demand for better fabrics, and to meet this demand it became necessary to have a large supply of different parts of looms. Practically no dust is ejected from the furnace, and there are no flames. Thus, in the youth of such a land mass as we have mentioned, torrential streams flowing down the steep mountain sides deliver to the adjacent sea their heavy loads of coarse waste, and thick offshore deposits of sand and gravel (Fig. Marine fossil shells, also, have been found at great depths, having probably been ingulfed during submarine earthquakes. The Alps were no doubt much lower, and the palms now found fossil in strata elevated 2000 feet above the sea grew nearly at the sea-level, as is demonstrated by the brackish- water character of some of the beds into which they were carried by winds or rivers from the adjoining coast.
