Because of this, woods of this class cannot be successfully kiln-dried green from the saw. Upon polarizing the ebullition, the blue tint gives way to yellow, and finally to a pretty grey. During the latter operation the acid combined with the mordant, being volatile, passes away, and the colouring matter and mordant enter into combination to form the colour lake, which is firmly fixed upon the fibre. As a result of these movements,-- perhaps several times repeated,--a great mountain range was upridged, which has been long since leveled by erosion, but whose roots are now visible in the Taconic Mountains of western New England. My late publication contains a relation of most of the facts which had come under my own inspection at the time it was written, interspersed with some conjectural observations.
