A legend is still preserved in the valleys of Joux and Les Rousses, to the following effect. The breast beam is held in position by two pegs near the right one of which there is a curved article of indeterminate use. Wood dries more rapidly in summer than in winter, not because there is less moisture at one time than another, but because of the higher temperature in summer. In old times, when the appearance and movements of comets were supposed to be altogether uncontrolled by physical laws, it was natural that comets should be regarded as signs from heaven, tokens of Divine wrath towards some, and of the interposition of Divine providence in favour of others. The hairy flocks were bred out, and the sheep with true wool, like the merino, survived. The money for the permits, in the meantime, goes to the government, and enriches the United States treasury. In woods with very decided contrast between early and late wood the two forms are usually distinct. A thorough acquaintance with the effect of the various parts of the flame upon it should be gained before further work is entered upon, for which purpose an hour or more spent in observing its behaviour in the flame will be fully repaid by increased success subsequently.
