The shrinkage is more apparent, more lasting, and of more consequence to the architect, builder, or owner than the slight expansion which takes place, as, although the amount of moisture contained in wood varies with the climate conditions, the consequence of dampness or moisture on good timber used in houses only makes itself apparent by the occasional jamming of a door or window in wet or damp weather. This and another conspicuous caterpillar (Halia wavaria) were rejected by two species--the geometrical garden spider (Epeira diadema) and a hunting spider. The principle or property on which the application of this group of dye-stuffs to the dyeing of textile fabrics depends is that they are of an acid character and combine with metallic oxides, like those of iron, aluminium, or chromium to form insoluble coloured bodies, or "colour lakes" as they are called. Their proportional numbers can by no means be explained by supposing them to have inhabited seas of great depth, for the contrast between the palaeozoic and the present state of things has not been essentially altered by the late discoveries made in our deep-sea dredgings.
